I arrived in the hipster Barranco neighborhood of Lima to begin my dining odyssey in a state of bliss. As a small family group of wedding stragglers, we’d surfaced from another worldly celebration at the river-jungle Wasai Tambopata Lodge in a spellbound state. (https://www.wasai.com/)
In that dazed condition, we were lucky that reservations were not essential at Awicha, which serves modern Peruvian food in a casual setting. It was conveniently just down the street from our Barranco-based lodgings so I ate there twice. Chef Jason Roman named his restaurant Awicha, meaning grandmother in the Quechua language, because his grandmother first taught him how to cook the traditional fare from the Huachana countryside in his mother’s restaurant.
Roman embraces French, Italian, and Japanese flavors from his work and culinary training in NY and Paris into contemporary Peruvian cuisine. This globetrotting menu produces dishes that include pickled shrimp, roasted fish, beef, squid, spaghetti and meat balls–who knows what’s next? I especially enjoyed the duck confit, and the cassoulet with duck confit, pork belly, chorizo, beans and creole sauce, France comes to Peru.
My journal notes say—good food, yummy Pisco Sours, and good enough wine. Note to self: eat here again and at nearby bakeries.
The captivating world of fusion in Latin American, especially in Lima, is an ethereal treasure making it worth frequent forays to uncover unparalleled delights.
